Wix to WordPress migration: what Wix lets you take and what gets rebuilt

In short

A Wix to WordPress migration is a rebuild, not a copy. Wix says a site must run on its servers, so there is no file to download. You export what Wix allows: products, CMS collections and contacts as CSV files, and a blog feed of at most 20 posts. Pages are rebuilt in WordPress, and old addresses get 301 redirects.

Key points

  • Wix's help page says a Wix site cannot use another host, because it runs on Wix's own technology. The domain can move; the site cannot.
  • Store products, CMS collections and contacts export as CSV files. Blog posts have no export, and the blog's RSS feed holds the 20 newest posts only.
  • On 18 Oct 2026 we read a public Wix blog. Its sitemap listed 44 posts, its feed held 20, and each feed entry carried a short excerpt, not the post.
  • Google asks for a list of old and new addresses, 301 redirects between them, and redirects kept for at least a year.

A Wix to WordPress migration is a rebuild. Wix does not hand you a copy of your site, so the move is a list of exports, a set of pages built again, and a redirect for every old address.

This post goes through what Wix lets you take, what stays behind, and the order we run a move in. Each step is checked against Wix’s, WordPress’s and Google’s own pages, read on 18 Oct 2026.

If you would rather hand the whole move over, our website migration service rebuilds Wix sites in WordPress and quotes each one after we have seen it.

Can you export a Wix site to WordPress?

No. Wix’s help page says a Wix site “must run on Wix’s servers”, because it “uses Wix’s proprietary technology and relies on Wix’s services to operate.”

The same page says the content you build belongs to you, and that your domain can be bought and managed somewhere else. So the domain can leave Wix. The site, as a working thing, cannot.

That changes what a move is. On WordPress to WordPress, files and a database are copied. From Wix, the text, images and data come out in pieces and go into a WordPress site built for them.

What does Wix let you export?

Some parts of a Wix site come out as files. Others have to be copied by hand. Here is what Wix’s help pages say, read on 18 Oct 2026.

Part of the siteWhat Wix gives youWhere it goes in WordPress
Store productsA CSV file: Store Products, More Actions, Import, Export ProductsThe WooCommerce product CSV importer
CMS collectionsA CSV file: More Actions, Export to CSVA custom post type or a table, built for that data
ContactsA CSV file of up to 50,000 contacts; only the site owner can exportYour email tool or a WordPress plugin
Blog postsNo export. Wix says it is “not possible to export blog posts to other platforms”Copied post by post
Pages and designNo exportRebuilt in WordPress
DomainTransfer away from Wix, or keep it and point it at the new hostYour new host or registrar

The store file is Wix’s own format. Each product has a row, and each image, GIF or video has a row of its own, tied together by a handle column. WooCommerce has a column mapping screen for this, and it downloads product images from their web addresses when the image host allows it.

Why does the Wix blog feed not move a whole blog?

Because it is short by design. Wix’s help page says a blog’s RSS feed “can only display up to 20 of the most recent blog posts”, and there is an open feature request to raise it.

We checked what the feed holds on a live site. On 18 Oct 2026 at 11:40 PM ET we read the feed and sitemap of a public Wix blog. The sitemap listed 44 posts. The feed held 20, the newest first, so the 24 oldest were missing.

The 20 that were there were not whole posts either. Each one had a title, a date, a link, one cover image and an excerpt of 129 to 140 characters. 18 of those excerpts ended in three dots, and of the other 2, one stopped mid-word and one ended on a link. Not one carried the body of a post.

So a feed import gives you titles and teasers. For a blog with years of posts, each post is copied from its own page, with its images saved and uploaded again. That copying, the address list and the redirects are the part of a Wix move we do for clients on our Wix website help service.

How do you migrate Wix to WordPress, step by step?

In seven steps. The Wix site stays live and untouched until the WordPress site has been checked.

  1. List every address. Open yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. On the Wix site we read, it pointed to three lists: blog posts, blog categories and pages. Google’s site move guide asks for the same list, as a map of every old address to its new one, once the new site is prepared.
  2. Export what Wix exports. Products, CMS collections and contacts, as CSV files, from the screens in the table above.
  3. Build the WordPress site on the new host. The old site keeps running at your domain while you work.
  4. Rebuild the pages. Copy the text and images across and match the layout as closely as the new theme allows.
  5. Move the blog. Copy each post in full. Re-upload its images, because Wix serves them from its own media server.
  6. Import the store. Map the Wix product columns to WooCommerce’s in its importer, then check variants, prices and images on a few products by hand.
  7. Redirect and switch. Add a 301 redirect from every old address to its new page, then point the domain at the new host.

Google’s guide asks for permanent redirects such as 301, no redirect chains, and redirects kept “for as long as possible, generally at least 1 year.”

Will a Wix to WordPress migration change my page addresses?

Almost always. On the Wix blog we read, posts sat under /single-post/, and older ones carried a date in the path, such as /single-post/2020/07/10/. WordPress builds its addresses from its own permalink setting, so those paths change on the move.

Search engines and other sites know the old addresses. The redirect list from step 1 is what keeps them working. We cannot promise rankings after a move, and nobody honest can. What we can do is make sure no old address ends on a 404 page.

If the new WordPress site later changes hosts, the address list works the same way; our post on moving a WordPress site to a new host without losing SEO covers that second move.

What does the WordPress RSS importer do with a Wix feed?

It imports what is in the file, and on Wix that is not much. WordPress’s handbook gives the steps: Tools, Import, install the RSS importer, run it, then upload the XML file.

The importer cannot add what the feed leaves out. On the blog we read, that meant 20 titles, dates and teasers. The plugin’s own page, read on 18 Oct, also warns that it “hasn’t been tested with the latest 3 major releases of WordPress.” Its last listed version is 0.3.2, tested up to WordPress 6.6.10.

We use the feed for one thing: a quick check of titles and dates against the sitemap, so no post is missed.

What happens to my domain?

It can come with you. If the domain was bought through Wix, Wix’s help page sets out the transfer: turn off the transfer lock, choose Transfer away from Wix, and Wix emails a transfer code (an EPP code) to the domain’s registrant contact.

Watch the dates. Wix says a domain cannot be transferred within 60 days of purchase, and a change to the registrant contact details locks it for 60 days too. If you are near either line, point the domain at the new host first and transfer it later.

Should you change anything on Wix before the move?

Keep changes small until the move is done. Your exports and your address list should describe the site you are moving, not one that changed halfway through.

If you do need to roll the Wix site back first, read what a Wix Site History restore brings back and what it leaves alone. Store, blog and CMS content does not revert with it.

What does a Wix to WordPress migration cost with us?

Every Wix move is quoted per site, after we have seen it. A five page site and a store with a few hundred products are different jobs, and one price for both would be a guess.

The quote names the price, what moves across, what has to be rebuilt and the checks we run before the switch. After the move, our monthly WordPress care is $99, or $229 for a WooCommerce store.

Planning a move off Wix?

Tell us about the Wix site you want to move: the address, roughly how many pages and posts, and whether it runs a store. If you want a look before you decide, ask for a free site check. It is a written report within 2 business days, with no call and no login.

Where did these facts come from?

Questions and answers

Can I export my Wix site to WordPress?

Not as a site. Wix's help page says a Wix site must be "hosted and operated on Wix's servers". You can export store products, CMS collections and contacts as CSV files, then rebuild the pages and posts in WordPress.

Can I import my Wix blog into WordPress with the RSS importer?

Only part of it. Wix's feed holds the 20 newest posts, and on the blog we read it carried a short excerpt per post, not the full text. The WordPress RSS importer can only bring in what the file holds, so full posts are copied from each post page.

Can I keep my domain when I move from Wix to WordPress?

Yes. Wix lets a site use a domain managed with another provider, and a domain bought through Wix can be transferred away. Wix sends a transfer code to the registrant email, and a domain cannot move within 60 days of purchase or of a change to its contact details.

Will moving from Wix to WordPress hurt my Google rankings?

Nobody can promise rankings. What protects them is a list of every old address, a 301 redirect from each one to its new page, and redirects kept for at least a year, as Google's site move guide sets out.

How much does a Wix to WordPress migration cost?

We quote every Wix move per site after we have seen it, because a five page site and a store with hundreds of products are different jobs. Monthly WordPress care after the move is $99, or $229 for a WooCommerce store.
